Schools Out Bright Sparks

Guy Disney, 29

Malvern College, Worcestershire Cavalry officer

Guy Disney lost his right leg below the knee when he was blown up by a rocket- propelled grenade in Afghanistan. Te gutsy cavalry officer has not let the experience slow him down: he recently returned from a gruelling trek, skiing to the North Pole with other severely injured servicemen. Te team, accompanied by Prince Harry, helped raise £2,000,000 for the Walking With the Wounded charity. “Tis was a great chance to show what is

achievable. It would be hard to say no if I had both legs, now I have one it is a must,” said Disney. A keen amateur jump jockey, he was back on a horse as soon as he had recovered and he is already back working with his regiment, the Light Dragoons.

Samantha Long, 25

St Catherine’s School, Surrey Geophysicist

A rising star of science and engineering, Samantha built a quad bike in the sixth form at St Catherine’s as part of her A-level D&T project. Her creation was featured in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Science and Engineering festival and she subsequently won the Prince Philip Young Entrepreneur of the Year award. After her time at St Catherine’s, Samantha went on to study Geophysics at Southampton University and travelled throughout Australia and Africa on a string of projects. She now works in Western Australia, leading a team operating a system called SkyTEM, which uses helicopters to conduct large scale electromagnetic surveys to identify conductors beneath the ground.

Steve Appleton, 22

St George’s College, Weybridge, Surrey Singer/Songwriter

Steve Appleton was “discovered” playing piano in the restaurant Café Fish when he was only 15. At about the same time, he composed an orchestral piece for his GCSE music project, but it was the launch of his hit anthem Dirty Funk, released in 2009, which propelled him into the global arena. Te song along with the launch of a well-received first album made him into an overnight dollar millionaire with an international following. He reached number one on the Japanese airplay charts, became a major hit in the Far East and featured on a BT commercial. After performing alongside John Legend, Te Saturdays and Te Pussycat Dolls, Steve sang Everyone at last year’s Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore, to a TV audience of 1.5 billion people. He recently released a second single, City Won’t Sleep, and played every instrument on his first album When the Sun Comes Up.
