Literary stars visit schools


Poets Jane Draycott and Sir Andrew Motion are two literary Gods who have visited schools recently. Draycott who has been nominated three times for the Forward Prize for Poetry and was shortlisted for the TS Eliot Prize in 2009, visited Year 8 and Year 10 at T e Godolphin & Latymer School to talk about the various stages of writing a poem. T e pupils then put pen to paper and wrote their own poems.


Meanwhile, former Poet Laureate Sir Andrew Motion was invited by T e English Society at Eltham College to talk to students, staff and parents about the poetry of Wilfred Owen,

tracing key themes, motifs and linguistic techniques through his poems. Later on, he spoke about the creative process of making a poem and read some of his more recent poetry on the war in Afghanistan.


In Derbyshire, journalist, author and former conservative MP Matthew Parris who has studied at Cambridge and Yale and also lived and travelled across Africa, shared some inspirational advice at Mount St Mary’s College.


Maria Montessori. In 2008, Montessori introduced the MEAB as a kitemark for schools who follow the Montessori method to a high standard, although the strict vetting process does mean that not all good Montessori schools have yet to receive accreditation.


Over 500 old girls,


former teachers, current pupils and their families gathered at Hanford School in Dorset to


celebrate Sarah Canning’s 80th birthday. Sarah, whose parents founded the school in 1947, still contributes massively to school life, teaching Latin and riding.

The great outdoors… Great fun was had by the pupils of Balham prep school, Hornsby House, on an activity week to France, Scotland and Shropshire. Year 6 enjoyed a tug of war on a windswept Scottish beach, while girls from Year 5 brushed up on their culinary skills, making mayonnaise in France.
