The Cashmere Suite bathroom

One of the castle’s luxurious bedrooms

while I plunged myself into a deep sofa and dreamed of steam rooms. As a spa-only, Stobo does not have the conference and private function traffi c typical of most hotels and the place is incredibly quiet. Most guests remain in their robes and slippers, service is discreet, voices are kept lowered, mobiles on silent. We had dinner that night feeling already altered. Our ears were having to adjust to a lesser clamour. Morning and it was time for me and my weary person to be attended to. I was ushered by Margaret to a

background, the dark purple of the Pentlands shimmered at us through the canopy of the huge gracious lime and oak trees of the castle park. On arrival, we were given a tour before being shown to our rooms. Bollinger Champagne awaited us, as did a huge bowl of fresh fruit, some Stobo chocolates and a Molton & Brown gift set each. Anna was whisked off – in one of Stobo’s hallmark white towelling robes – for a manicure,

treatment room, and while my sister engaged in a Pilates class, and others swam, saunered and salsacised, I lay down in a sanctuary of marine minerals in a room of soothing music and gave myself over to the pleasures of a Phytomer Sea Holistic Treatment. Had the world been our oyster, I might

have had an aromatherapy massage and my kinesiology balanced. I know I would have benefi ted from food testing and probably, too, from a session of Sound T erapy. As it was, we both booked out feeling more

relaxed than when we arrived. Now our memories of the summer holidays were nothing but happy and the task of putting life back in order seemed more than doable.
