Up-scaling aquaculture systems

THE European Aquaculture Society’s Forum, which takes place every second Aqua Nor, concentrated on the theme of: ‘Optimising system size for enhanced productivity with environmental equilib- rium.’

EAS President Yves Harache provided the opening speech

Taking place on the 17th & 18th August it provided an opportunity for science, indus- try, consumers and policy makers to review developments in the aquaculture sector and to discuss the key issues that affect those developments. Organised in cooperation with the Nor-Fishing Foundation, SINTEF and CREATE, it addressed one of the critical con- straints to the development of aquaculture in Europe – notably access to sites with high wa- ter quality to ensure high quality aquaculture products. By up-scaling production systems an increase in productivity can be obtained for any specifi c site; but this must be compliant with legislation, with regard to fi sh welfare, with regard to husbandry and especially with regard to the environmental impacts of increased production systems. Below is a sum- mary of the discussions, details of which will shortly be available on the EAS website.
