Record seafood exports Norwegian News Value dips as volume rises

THE value of Norwegian seafood exports in August totalled NOK 2.1 billion (£243 million), a decline of 13 per cent compared to the same month last year. In the same period, volumes increased by 10,000 tonnes. So far this year, salmon exports have amounted to NOK 19.4 billion (£2.25 billion), an increase of 2% compared to the same period last year, according to fi gures issued by the Norwegian Seafood Export Council.

‘Salmon exports have fallen in value for the third month running. The reason for this is the fall in demand for fresh salmon, at the same time as the international competi- tion in the salmon market, from Chile in particular, has stiffened,’ says Paul Aandahl, market analyst at the NSEC. The average export price for whole salmon in August was NOK 28.37 per kg. This is NOK 2.70 lower than average prices for July and NOK 11.42 lower than the same month last year. So far this year, the average price for fresh whole salmon is NOK 36.53 per kg, NOK 0.50 lower than the same period last year. 7,988 tonnes of salmon products were exported to Asia in August, representing a growth of 1,901 tonnes, or 24%. While growth to Asia has been relatively stable this year, growth in the Eastern European market has

greatly accelerated, rising by 3,110 tonnes (41%) in August. The NSEC also notes that, although there has been little growth in EU markets this year, growth in August amounted to 15% or 5,944 tonnes. The strongest growth was seen in Finland, France and Denmark.

Market influence Meanwhile Thomas A Larsen, a scientist at Nofi ma, has contended that no single Norwegian producer is suf- fi ciently large to be able to manipulate the export price of fresh salmon to their advan- tage. ‘This may mean that the markets perceive fresh salmon as a generic product, and that

they have equal preference for the various Norwegian producers and their product. If this is the case, the Norwegian Seafood Export Council has done a brilliant job promoting Norwegian salmon out in the markets,’ he contends. Larsen has also analysed the use of contracts in the salmon industry, and has found a widespread use of fi xed-price contracts between players in the Norwegian salmon industry and foreign importers. Even though there are at times large differences between the market price and the contract price, he says the total income for the industry has not been signifi cantly af- fected by the contracts.
