There are so many people who need help in more ways than I can describe. I like to believe I'm doing something about it. In this county where I live, I meet many people passionate about causes that need attention. They send me information about how they are raising funds for this orga- nization, and that organization, and the best part is...I can tell all of you about it! I love to pub- lish these causes and I am often told the response is incredible! I thank all of you who take the time to go and attend and donate your time, resources and finances to people you've probably never met, in need. You are the true heros in life. Upbeat Times is a close up photo of a statue in a private garden in Santa Rosa, owned by my friend, Ian T. Allison. Ian Allison says, "This sculpture is 'The Union of Earth and Water' - This original sculpture is a commis- sioned work by me created from a Peter Paul Reuben’s painting by the same name, c.1618. It was carved in the Orient from imported Manchurian marble.
The VERBAL COMMUTE
The four elements, Earth, Air, Fire, and Water, were considered to be fundamental elements of the world contents, and were usually depicted as classical gods and goddesses. In this painting, Earth is personified by Ceres or Cybele (Greek) and Water is personified by Neptune, god of the sea. The statue was commissioned from Ruben’s painting because of its depiction of Neptune, and weighs an excess of 10,000 pounds. It was originally designed as a U.S. Merchant Marine Veterans’ Memorial monument in honor of every Merchant Mariner who has crossed the equator. I have crossed the equator over 20 times while shuttling aviation fuel to the South Pacific and the Philippines during World War II." As I walk through Ian's
property, statues are everywhere along with a beautiful garden I truly admire. Ian has spent his life sending seeds to nearly every corner of the planet educating people in gardening and grow- ing their own food. I realize that even though I am very busy most of the the time, I enjoy visiting when I can. At 92 years old he

question that I kid around with people with: "Do you know how you know when your old?' I ask. And most people look at me blank- ly or say, 'Uh, I don't know, 70, 80 I guess'. And I say, "You don't know you're old, because your not alive anymore. And if your not alive anymore, you don't know you're old" My grandmother said it best.
She would say (at 89), while we were sitting having a ham- burger I would bring her weekly, things like, 'Old people are so silly sometimes. They try to act old, complaining about all their problems and pains, it drives me crazy! What good does it do?!" She was referring to her neigh- bors in the senior community she lived in, and why she didn't visit with them much anymore. The best part was, that even up to one week before she passed away, she never complained about being bed ridden, deal- ing with a cholostomy, decayed hips and cancer. She was young! Her attitude was wonderful. Her thoughts were clear. Her love for life was powerful. And, if she didn't have anything good to say, she didn't say anything. But of course, both of us being talkers, we immediately engaged in end- less conversations about life and

what was still possible! She would also say to me,
"Paul, you've got a good thing going there with that Upbeat Times Paper! What a wonderful service it is to the community, and what a difference it makes and surely how badly it's needed. You stick with it...your time will come and it will pay off'. I think it has paid off from day one, and I agree with her. It brings a smile, makes a difference. And for me personally? It is a lot of fun, and I can sleep at night know- ing that I am bringing together people in a way that is badly needed; Positively, and for all the right reasons. If your a per- son who see's the positive side of everything he/she encounters, and even it isn't always a pleasur- able experience, which at times it isn't, if at least one lesson can be learned in the process you are one step ahead of the rest.
