Spend a full day here, with ample time to hike to the top rampart for a spectacular view of the wall snaking for miles over mountainous terrain. Take a rickshaw ride through the winding alleys known as Hutong, relax with a foot refl exology massage and enjoy a Peking duck dinner and Opera show. The highlight of any stay in Xian is the life-size Terracotta Warriors, one of the world’s most astonishing archaeological fi nds. Here you will also visit the Big Goose Pagoda and ancient city walls before sampling some traditional Chinese cuisine.
Head to Shanghai for a stroll along The Bund, an impressive embankment lined with neo-classical buildings, and enjoy an afternoon cruise along the Huangpu River that divides the old and the new city. Other highlights include the tranquil Yu Yuan Gardens and the ornate Jade Buddha Temple. Before heading home be sure to visit the local markets and bazaars to put your bartering skills to the test.
