Shuttleworth and Sparsholt Colleges, the WCC event marshals

For many years now, College Students have been the offi cial Event Marshals. These young

men and women are undergoing Fisheries courses at their respective Colleges and, along with a few of their Tutors, play a very important role

throughout the event. Initially, and prior to the event, the Students kindly provide much needed help in setting up the hall, HQ and a variety of other tasks... and all that before undertaking their main duties as Event Marshals. Then, whether it is guiding anglers to their swims, helping to move the

mountains of tackle or weighing and recording carp caught at ungodly hours around the clock, they have proven to be invaluable each and every year. It doesn’t even end there for them, either, as after the event they clear rubbish from the banks and hall area, uninstall staging, and collect signage and a multitude of other tasks! Unquestionably, they fully deserve everyone’s respect and gratitude for giving up their time to attend, and we are very pleased to say that generally, they get it! It is with the greatest of pleasures

that we once again welcome the Students of Shuttleworth and Sparsholt Colleges and we hope that you, the anglers, will assist them in every way possible to make their task as easy as possible and help them to ensure that the event runs smoothly.

JOSH SANDARS: A DEFINING MOMENT Magazine sponsored by Pescalis

From the age of nine I have been a very keen carp angler with a passion for catching big, sovereign covered carp. I am very keen

to the point that I even study within the subject area at Sparsholt College, undertaking my fi fth and fi nal year on the Bsc Sports Fisheries and Aquaculture course. Throughout the

duration of the course I have developed an obsession for the world of angling journalism and after my degree I plan to build upon my profi le, hopefully enabling me to fulfi l my dream of a position within the trade. For six years now I

luckily my work was noticed. Now, for the 2010 WCC I have been offered the great opportunity to be affi liated to the competition as one of the offi cial photographers. So, for all of you lucky

competitors who will be joining us this year, you will get to know me very well with the vast amounts of carp you will be catching! I hope that you will all

get your carp holding poses perfected and ready for your time at the WCC as I look forward to photographing you all.

irst of all, welcome to those who are fi shing this great competition for the fi rst time. I hope that you really enjoy the

special atmosphere in the lead up to the event and that you fi sh well and catch some of those beautiful Madine carp. As Head Marshall for the event I

just want to highlight a few of the rules and it will also be a good reminder to those who have fi shed in the event in previous years. There is a long list of rules but that is

a necessity for an event of this stature to ensure fair play and, most of all, the safety of all competitors. If you have a query or need some clarifi cation of a rule, then please ask either myself or one of my Marshalls.

Distance.. The maximum distance you may fi sh to is 200 metres. This has been an issue in previous events but last year saw the introduction of distance markers for the fi rst time, and I was very happy with the results. I know that some competitors were

moaning about them beforehand, in the forum, but they did the job and did not interfere with anyone’s fi shing. The results also showed that being very strict on distance did not affect the carp as, more, and bigger fi sh were caught than in previous events. The markers will be back again this year and I will come down hard on any competitor who thinks they can break this rule and try to cheat. I don’t want to disqualify anyone but I have done in the past and will do so in the future, if required, so be warned.

Boats.. Just a couple of points here. There is a list of requirements for the boat check as this is important for safety. Please read this section carefully

to ensure that you have everything on the list before getting your boat checked and keep them in your boat during the event. You can only use the boat for fi shing, echo sounding, looking around your swim once the competi- tion has started. You may use a boat to get to your swim with your equipment also, but that is it. When the competition starts one

competitor must always be on the bank, a competitor and a runner may
