uring my 10 year career as a professional Decathlete, no stone was left unturned when it came to preparing for major events such as
World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Olympics. On average I would be training for

fi ve hours a day six days a week with medical treatment three-four times a week, even if I was healthy. It sounds tough but in reality, it was so much harder than words can describe, but I loved it! During the 48 hours of competing in the Decathlon, every athlete questions themselves. With the mental torture and, of course, the physical demands of 10 gruelling events, I managed to push myself to the limit and beyond, eventually bringing home two World medals, two Olympics 4th places and winning the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Fishing came as a rest from the intense nature of my athletics, even though I fi sh with
a local caravan park lake when I was 11 years old
and my fi rst fi sh that day was a small skimmer bream of about 8oz. Not big, but big enough to get me hooked on the sport for life. I spent many years just pleasure angling before starting to enter a few club/open matches in and around Essex where I’m based. I enjoyed the competitive side of match fi shing but always felt that my real passion lay in specimen fi shing, so, one day I went down to my local tackle shop and invested in a cheap two rod carp kit. My fi rst real session, which was 24 hours, I landed 16 fi sh up to a lake
‘Now I have the
record 22.8lb common and a 29lb wells catfi sh. The seed had been planted, and for a few years I targeted only carp, upping my pb every year to a current 43.3lb. Now, however, I fi sh for anything that swims that is of a larger than average size and my luck has followed me with Roach to 3.2lb, Bream to 13.14lb, Tench to 10.12lb and Chub to 7lb all gracing my net. In more recent years I’ve started
travelling aboard to fuel my obsession and I have enjoyed some awesome results topped by my largest freshwater fi sh, an Arapaima of 280lb. Now, with the WCC, I have the
opportunity to combine my love for competitive sports and angling all in one’
just as much effort as I

opportunity to combine my love for completive sports and angling all in one. In Rob, I have a good partner and I’m sure that if we are lucky enough to draw a swim that puts us on the fi sh, we can do ourselves proud. For me, this is the highlight of the year and I can’t wait to get started!
