Special Comments: The decedent had re- cently graduated from college and had apparently taken Ecstasy at a party. He then began to act strangely and cut his wrists. His friends rushed him to a hospi- tal where he was involuntarily committed. He was transferred the next day to a hos- pital closer to his home and within 15 hours had escaped when he persuaded a doctor and nurse to let him smoke a ciga- rette. He was taken outside by the nurse and he ran away. He was found the next day after committing suicide by hanging.

Facts:␣ The decedent experienced sudden chest pains while out to dinner with his two adult children and was taken to the ER. While at the ER, these pains migrated around to his back, then down through his abdomen to his left leg. A doppler study was done which showed that the blood flow to his left leg had been dimin- ished by at least 50 percent. He had been under care at George Washington Renal Clinic for kidney problems caused by life long hypertension. Allegedly, the ER doc- tor called GW at 4 o’clock in the morning to consult with the physician on call on this case before releasing the decedent, advising him that he was fine except for indigestion and anemia. Several days later, he went to GW for his regularly sched- uled checkup. He was not seen by his regular doctor but by someone who was covering for him. He allegedly told the covering doctor of the symptoms that he had had that brought him to the ER and
