MTLA Congratulates its 2002-2003 Award Winners MTLA presented several awards to its members in May of this year.
During the MTLA Presidents Dinner held this year at the Center Club on May 30, awards were presented to three (3) deserving members by outgoing MTLA President Robert K. Jenner.
President’s Award: Nicole Schultheis This Award is given by the President to a member who has provided devoted service and greatly enhanced the organization in some way during the past year.
This year’s recipient was recognized for her tireless work as Chair of the Technology Committee, which
oversaw a vast improvement in the MTLA web site, for furthering the development of the MTLA Listserve and for creating and editing the new MTLA email publication the Weekly B-L-A-S-T.
Distinguished Service Award: David F. Albright, Jr. The Awards Committee recognized David for his outstanding efforts in keeping MTLA on a sound financial footing for the past several years as chair of the Fundraising Committee. David has taken on the challenging task and helped turn MTLA into a well funded entity by greatly increasing the size of the President’s Club donor program, inaugurating the new Eagle category and helping MTLA expand the programs and services it offers members, including our strong participation in governmental relations matters all occurring without a major dues increase.
Trial Lawyer of the Year Award: Evelyn O. A. Darden, Mark Darden, III and William H. (Billy) Murphy This distinguished trial team, joined by other members of their firms and other non Maryland attorneys, successfully represented the victims of Maryland’s state run Boot Camps (cASE OF GARY J., ET AL V. STATE OF MARYLAND) who had volunteered for this alternative program but were then subjected to physical and verbal abuse in a program that did not live up to what it had promised young men at risk. In achieving the settlement for their clients, these outstanding attorneys were able to also secure educational funding and scholarships for the young men who participated in the Boot Camp program.
Two new awards were approved by the Board of Governors and handed out during the General Membership Meeting held at the Lord Baltimore Radisson Hotel on May 14, 2003.
