I keep with me at all times a copy of
the Trial Reporter from July, 1996. The Trial Reporter is both symbol and sub- stance of the dramatic progress which MTLA has made in the last several years. In July, 1996, the Trial Reporter was forty - four pages (including the front and back cover) and printed on plain paper stock; six years later, the summer 2002 issue was sixty - eight pages and printed on glossy paper. In the same manner that the Trial Reporter has improved in quantity and quality, MTLA has also improved. Since July, 1996, MTLA has created four new sections (Family Law, Medical Negligence, New Lawyers, and Workers Compensa- tion), established a well - used List Serve, developed its Web Page, greatly expanded and rationalized the deposition bank, and provided increased membership services. MTLA has significantly increased its pres- ence in Annapolis; in the Legislature we have increased the number of lobbyists from one to three, and in the Appellate Courts MTLA has increased its partici- pation in the filing of amicus briefs. The educational programs which MTLA has offered have greatly increased in both number and breadth, culminating in our Annual Convention. MTLA has also sig- nificantly enhanced its participation in other social causes through the bike hel- met program, the pro bono committee, and Trial Lawyers’ Care. Simply, MTLA is a vital and growing organization which has served well its membership and the community. There is no question that MTLA has dedicated members and volunteers who are willing to devote enormous time to enable MTLA to fulfill its goals. How- ever, MTLA needs substantial financial resources to meet its goals. In order to meet the financial chal- lenge, the Board of Governors at the September meeting unanimously ap-

proved the creation of a new level of giv- ing in the President’s Club called the Eagles. Each Eagle has agreed to contrib- ute $300 per month. The Eagles receive top recognition in the Trial Reporter as well as at MTLA events; the Eagles will have blue badges which symbolize that when MTLA members work together, the sky is the limit. In addition to the ben- efits of the Founder’s Level, the Eagles also receive a free advertising page in the Mem- bership Directory. As you can see from this edition of the Trial Reporter, there are currently eleven Eagles; we are hope- ful that the number will greatly expand in the coming months. Every member of MTLA should as-
pire to become an Eagle as capacity per- mits. MTLA improves the quality of our practices, represents the interest of victims of personal injury in Annapolis, and strives continually for social justice. With- out a strong and vibrant MTLA, the joy of our vocation would be significantly decreased. Many of you will be contacted regard- ing the Eagles program. Please remember that all of us have a responsibility as stew- ards of our fine organization to ensure its future growth and vitality. We are all leaders in the fight for justice in the Courts and the Legislature; we also need to show that leadership in terms of our financial commitment.
