SEnine Parking cash Cow In 5 y 5 ears of vf llif iEl h ery pleasant life in Eltham,

my wife and I have parked in Sainsbury’s off the High Street, at M&S now & then, and also on the other side of Orangery Lane, in the car park backing on to the back gardens of Dobell Road.

They changed their parking rates there recently, we noted, to a sensible sounding pro rata system of 80 pence per hour. Their new sign also pointed out that parking was free on Sundays. Bank-holidays? Nothing said as such. Well, off we went Mon 30th May, bank- holiday, to park there thinking no more about whether bank-holidays were like Sundays (free).

They turned out not

to be, and we got a fine. The parking attendant was mooching about at the far end of the park as we peeled off our penalty notice. Now, among the 3 car-parks over the few years we have often parked free on a bank-holiday and thought no more about it, and we were entitled so to do, I feel sure. But the 1st day, ever, we see an attendant is on a bank-holiday just when the sign had been altered so that it made no direct references to bank-holidays. The faint enough smell of a cash cow bothered us for the next little while. Can they not think of some other way to save money? Not to worry, pay up and look big, they say. We don't feel it.

Vincent Kelly Traffic hazards

We enjoy the magazine very much and pass it on to friends outside of the area, with hints that there is no reason they why they should not subscribe for their own copy. While writing has SPY heard anything about the proposed parking restrictions around Avery Hill? The situation is really out of hand now. On Bexley Road I have witnessed busses having to go to the wrong side of the traffic islands due to the presence of parked cars. I would have thought the police had existing powers to deal with this.

Hi it h b th l tt Money before residents

How amusing it has been the last two Sunday's to go into the Tesco 'express' in Eltham - right next door to my flat so more than handy - and have a chuckle about Ryan Giggs and his recent alleged 'activities'...first time, the shop assistant and I had a laugh at the front page of the News of The Screws and yesterday a customer and I joked at the further developments in the tawdry tale...if these rich and pampered sportsmen do nothing else, at least they exist for us to mock. Football holds no interest for me. And for women, it is laughable... the appetites, guile and vanities of men, be they multi-millionaires or otherwise. And it made shopping in that Tesco 'express' bearable for a moment - too often it is a joyless experience, the food is overpriced, the selection is poor, the aisles not wide enough the staff are slow, grumpy and dismissive and who can blame them - on duty for too many hours at too low a wage and with too little breaks. Very often they must also contend with rude people, drunkards, annoying teenagers and huffing shoppers. Why they do not have a till just for petrol payers I don't know - I often let people just paying petrol go in front of me because its mean to make them wait while I get my shopping... and wait we do..Tesco, get your act together, motivate your staff with more than fear and lets see some humanity at work. Greed is so dull and ultimately self-defeating.

I would like to say thank you to the kind lady who found my dropped doctor’s prescription in the Co-op, and then came to find my house to return it as she was worried about the amount of personal details on it. I know she went to a lot of trouble as it is not easy to find houses on Lovelace Green. Thank you very much, your kindness is appreciated.

Transport links

In the June 2011 SEnine Clive Efford MP talks about bringing the DLR to Eltham. Clive has suggested this more than once previously (usually at election time) but has conspicuously failed to interest anyone at City Hall who might be able to deliver it. Thus the latest list of possible future DLR extensions includes one to Catford and Forest Hill but doesn’t mention Eltham at all. Greenwich Council's sole contribution to the debate has been to pay consultants for a long delayed and still unpublished feasibility report. A DLR extension to Eltham sounds attractive but we need greater openness from our elected representatives about its chances and why Transport for London don’t seem to be interested. If the idea is a non-starter then we need to consider other ways of improving our transport links.

Paul Webbewood Conservative reply

Dear Sir, Reference the letter from John Parsons published in your May 2011 issue relative to the spend of £1M on the Eltham Conservative Club.

We the club would like to make it quite clear that this spend is from the club funds itself following the sale of part of our land and not as the letter may suggest that the local council is providing the money.
