Wedding Wins Audience The
REVIEW
production of Lorca's Blood Wedding opened
with a beautiful though bare set and synchronised flamenco inspired dance. The lyrical words of the adaptation written by Ted Hughes were a stark contrast to
the severe traditional
black costumes of the Mother and the Neighbour. Jane Cummings was superb as the Mother.
The Bridegroom wore simple less severe peasant clothes, and spoke of his desire to marry the Bride. The Bride is revealed to have had a
previous relationship with Leonardo, who is of the family that killed the father
of the Bridegroom. The Mother finds this difficult to deal with but is supportive of her son’s wishes. The second act revolved around the wedding preparations, and Leonardo telling the Bride he still loves her. The act closes after the wedding to the discovery that the beautiful bride has run away with Leonardo. This was all accompanied by the original Spanish guitar and violin music, which was truly breathtaking. Ted Parker on guitar and Yana Burova on violin gave truly emotive performances.
The third act took a surreal turn with the poetry of the Moon, the stylised dance choreography of trees with their spooky maracas, and the chorus of girls with red wool. It was enthralling
by Beattie Slavin to watch.
The
costumes here veered from traditional to capture the dr eamlik e nature of
this chase of the absconding couple. The lighting was all that was necessary to take the simple set from the heat of the day to the darkness of the night. This was another wonderful production that highlights how lucky we are to have this Theatre in our midst.
