Oxleas Woodlands Public Meeting The
Shooters Hill Woodlands Working Party is a
partnership between local groups interested in the well-being of Oxleas Woodlands and Greenwich Council. Volunteers have been doing conservation work in the woodlands every month since 1994 when the threat of a road through them was removed. The woodland is a special place for local people who use them for recreation and the working group has been helping to
keep them special. They are designated as an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), a Local Nature Reserve and Metropolitan Open Land, and are ancient woodlands that have been here since the last ice age.
The group held a lively public meeting at Shrewsbury House at the end of May to talk with local people about the work and get their views. The meeting heard about the need to remove or reduce certain species such as Japanese knotweed, rhododendron, holly and sycamore. Pond renovation, improvements to paths and hedges was also described. There was general agreement also about increasing diversity in the woods by cutting some areas (coppicing) to increase light. These activities give space for native species such as oak to grow from seed.
People at the meeting suggested that funding should be sought so that further projects could be undertaken such as more hedges and coppicing. Further publicity of the work should be given to inform local people of the volunteer workdays.
