Grand Medieval Joust SEnine


writer Beattie Slavin was one of


over three and a half thousand people, about half of whom were children, who got to experience the pageantry of a medieval joust at Eltham Palace in June. This event brought olden times to life. Though the weather was inclement it was well worth weathering.


There were old-fashioned children’s games on the south lawn. There was sword fighting with foam swords and a knights training school for children. Both were enjoyed by many young knights.

who recounted many interesting tales, we were treated to a hawk, a Malaysian wood owl and a pair of falcons demonstrating their hunting skills. It was marvellous to see.

The joust itself began with the four knights demonstrating their horsemanship, using javelins and we then saw them


don their armour. A


live interactive history lesson, as the knights answered questions and explained about the fitting. We then saw them joust. Each knight jousted with the other three knights accumulating points according to where they struck each other. It was spectacular to watch two horses and knights charge at each other.

Brain Food Night A


quiz night for a summer Friday evening is being run at the


Progress Hall, Admiral Seymour Road, Eltham on July 15.


The general knowledge quiz will also include interval games and stand-up bingo.


Teams will be on tables of eight which can be organised in advance or on
