Eltham Pool Champion Fourteen
years after being given
a new lease of life by Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, Denis O’Connor was determined to ‘put something back’.
Even after losing a hip to hospital infection and reaching 87 years of age, he wanted to raise money to help others.
So, egged on by his mates, he embarked on a sponsored swim which saw him break through his 12 length target by adding six further lengths of the Eltham Centre pool for good measure.
The result was a cheque for £1,100 which he presented to the fundraising team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity and will be put towards more equipment for their cardiac unit.
In 1987, Denis had a quadruple heart bypass at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital,
“It was time I did something to say thank you for the successful operation and to help others have the same chance”, he said.
The idea first came up at his branch of the Oddfellows in Woolwich but was heartily endorsed by his friends at the

Denis is no stranger to the pool. At 7.30am on two mornings a week, he keeps fit at the pool, helped into the water with a hoist.
“The staff at the centre are wonderfully helpful; to be honest, my sessions are a mixture of swimming and chat”, he said.
“It makes me feel great being in the water; on dry land, I’m not as mobile as I was because of my hip but in the water, it’s much easier.”
Denis, married for 63 years to Mary and a former Fleet Street print engineer, was originally from Rotherhithe and classmate of singer and entertainer Max Bygraves. His two daughters and six grandchildren live locally.
