"A cracking time"
“A cracking time” is due at the first ever South Devon Crab Festival: 1-7 August
what better way to celebrate one of the UK’s most delicious and sustainable seafood than with a street party on the banks of the river Dart in Dartmouth on Sunday 7th August. two thousand tonnes of crab are landed in the Start bay area every year yet more than sixty percent of the crab is exported to France and Spain. South Devon crab is believed to be the best in the world and its stocks are plentiful and sus- tainably fished. the Festival is a further initiative to persuade the UK market to enjoy this food source. the crab street party will be launched by the visit South Devon tourism partnership and local chef Mitch tonks. this is just one of a week long series of fun foodie events organised as part of the South Devon Crab Festival (August 1-7) and which will take place at venues all across South Devon. the South Devon crab festival follows on from the launch of the highly successful “let’s have a cracking time” sustainable food campaign last year, which promoted the joys of eating of South Devon crab.
A
Highlights of the festival will include crab tastings, work- shops, cook-ins, crab treasure hunt, crab train and cruise, “Crack crabs with Mitch tonks on the golden Hind” and the must do social event, the Crab ball. there will also be a wide range of competitions and beach events as well as South Devon’s famous “Crab Celebrity” making an appearance at seven events in the area. South Devon Crab will also take centre stage at the famous Shaldon water Carnival and the finale of the festival with the crab street party in Dartmouth. Mitch tonks says that South Devon Crab is the best in the world and that a street party in Dartmouth is a fitting way to celebrate it. “Our first ever crab festival to celebrate the wonders of South Devon crab, and held in the capital of sea- food in the UK, Dartmouth, is going to be truly great! tables outdoors under cover; local restaurants and cafés hosting the party - there will be an amazing buzz and party feeling in the town. if you are a fan of crab then you can’t miss it and if you are not sure about crab i urge you to come along and try. this is crab as fresh as it gets; caught, cooked and served- there is no better way to enjoy it.”
summer celebration of South Devon crab begins next month with the launch of the first ever festival dedicated to all things crab!
