Summer Wine Recommendations from Ed Capper of the Dartmouth Wine Company

At this time of year, many wine experts will recommend the typical, light, easy drinking wines associated with summer. Instead, I thought I might give some of my own, which whilst not necessarily bucking the trend, do recognise there are a lot of robust wines from hot climates which deserve to be served at a relatively warm temperature. Indeed, in their country of origin, they are enjoyed at a lot warmer temperatures than in the UK. For instance, why not try some juicy New World rosé, from countries such as Argentina, Chile, Australia or New Zealand. These wines are richer and darker than their French relatives and have more of their individual red grape characteristics, still being dry but with much more fruit and flavour. These wines are not necessarily in fashion but are definitely worth a try!

And then there are the richer Old

World wines which accompany strong flavoured barbequed food really well. There is of course the Reserve and Grand Reserve Riojas for real luxury but for those not wanting to spend that much, there are less well known regions such as Valdepenas or Jumilla. Both produce rich, character-full and exciting wines which are a bit easier on the wallet. Tuscan wines are also a brilliant alternative with their complex, round rich flavours.

There are many top quality red wines from the New World at extremely competitive prices. McLaren Vale, Coonawarra and Barossa areas of South Australia offer rich, berry-fruit, spicey, chocolaty, sometimes gently tannic Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. They are full of character, kicking into touch the myth that Aussie wine is as subtle as an Australian. For a more subtle, easy-drinking approach, try some Western Australian red with its slightly gentler but still full, complete wine. Argentina’s Mendoza region is the area usually associated with wine but why not try some from

Patagonia, which is actually the southern-most wine area in the world. The wines have a real Latin feel to them and have your taste buds dancing- contrary to popular belief, they are not made by sheep farmers! Finally but by no means least, are the Californian reds. They have a very different style, using common-place grape varieties such as Tempranillo, Petit Syrah, Malbec and Zinfandel but are more complex, approachable and accomplished wines with lots of juicy fruit. Next Month, I will look at White Wine recommendations.
