Dartmouth’s Small Community delivers the Big Society

t’s been just 4 weeks since love Dartmouth, the free social network for Dartmouth, was announced in by the Dart and already it’s being hailed by Dr. Sarah wollaston, MP as a contribution to big Society. She says: “love Dartmouth contributes to the government’s big Society vision of communities being empowered to solve problems in their neighbourhood, with freedom to discuss topics that matter to them and a local approach to social action and responsibility.”
Our local community groups have certainly been quick to take advantage of the network and have set up their own “group” pages to promote their projects and encourage participation. the Flavel Arts Centre has a group with news and reviews of up-coming films and events. Al Depledge runs the Dart Music Festival group which is building a great collection of festival photos and discussing the artists for next year. the Dartmouth Film Society have a new group and the
Dartmouth Players are in, recruiting for the next Panto. For social history fans there’s the Bygone Dartmouth group with it’s inspired Story of My House forum and the start of a valuable historic photo collection. For local photographers there’s the Foto Dartmouth group, with a growing number of beautiful images being added daily. Dr. wollaston says: “there’s a fun factor too, so meet your neighbours, contribute to debates, participate in polls and research about local issues.” there’s certainly room for fun. we even have a group for

pets run by a Dartmouth resident cat called Doctor Rudy. get your furry friend to join in the discussion about pet hates and vets. Don’t miss Andy Kyle’s blog
on “72 Places to Eat or Drink in Dartmouth and Kingswear”. if you’re a home worker, come and join the lively forum on “Hints and Tips for Working From Home”. Fran’s top tip is “Don’t look at your computer until you’ve showered and dressed. Otherwise you may find you are still sitting there in your dressing gown at lunchtime!” there’s something for everyone. if you’re part of a business or community group, then love Dartmouth is a great place to share and engage with local people. As a resident, have fun meeting your neighbours online, promote your garage sales, charitable coffee mornings, Open gardens and so much more. As a visitor, love Dartmouth will increasingly become your place to find out what’s going on and welcomes your contributions too. this is just the beginning and new features and services will be launched during next few months.
