The monthly community magazine for Dartmouth and local villages

Best read local publication by far IN THIS ISSUE Dear Reader

First of all, a big thank you to the kind lady who visited our offices last month with a gift of a box of quality biscuits as a ‘reward’ to the BTD staff for producing a magazine which in her words “was so good, we should charge for it”. Well to some extent, we are doing just that this month - but wait, don’t worry, the residents of Dartmouth and the surrounding villages will still get their free copies but visitor demand for the magazine is such that we run out of copies (those that are bulk dropped around the town) in a matter of just a few short days. This month, we are experimenting with a small increase in our print run to make some copies available for sale (through Pillars Newsagents in Lower Street, Dartmouth) to visitors. But we will only bring these out once we are satisfied that all the ‘free’ copies have gone - the numbers of the latter will not change from previous months.

This month, we focus alot on the river Dart. If you’re visiting Dartmouth, or perhaps have become blasé about the delights on our doorstep, then do please read our various guides on what to see by Kate Cotton and Phil Sheardown. There’s a fascinating account of why salmon & trout stocks in the river have fallen in recent years in David Jones’ Food & Drink column. Visiting Dartmoor? - read our Out & About feature. We’ve also talked to the skippers of the River Boats. There’s a fascinating history of the Battle of Blackpool Sands. Phil Scoble has talked to those businesses who’ve suffered as a result of last year’s major fire in the town and he brings us up to date on how the rebuilding is progressing.... and that’s only a taster of what’s in this issue. Enjoy it.

Best wishes, Mark Simpson, Publisher
