ue to a number of factors—not the least of which is an ailing economy—there’s been a dis- tinct surge in the popularity of small-group personal training

(SGPT), and, experts predict, it’s going to continue to grow. SGPT is neither one-on-one personal

training, nor is it group exercise. It’s a unique class format that straddles

the two, falling conveniently in between. “SGPT has been around since personal

training expanded to the general market in the late 1980s,” points out Michael Motta, the president of Plus One Health Manage- ment, Inc., a corporate wellness consulting firm based in New York City. “Going back even further, the small-group circuit train- ing protocols that The European Health Spa promoted in the ’70s could also be clas- sified as a very basic form of SGPT.” Historically, the approach has tended to

emerge, naturally, nearly organically, in sports-training environments.>
