ompanhia Athletica, the Brazilian health club chain, has developed an Activities Accuracy Manager (AAM), a system that generates training programs that effectively address the


conditions, needs, and objectives of each individual member. Using an iPod Touch, trainers are alerted to a member’s arrival at the


gym, and are provided with their personal-profile data and a description of the training program they’re supposed to follow. Utilizing this information, trainers can then improve their client planning, integrate physical assessments as indicated, renew programs in a timely manner, and, ultimately, maximize results. The AAM software relies on the guidelines of the American College


of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the Brazilian Society of Cardiology to inform the prescription of activities and periods indicated, or contraindi- cated, for over 400 diseases and disorders. The software also records the data obtained in the Test of Functional Movement (TMF). Devel- oped in the U.S., TMF was adapted by Companhia Athletica to analyze a member’s exercise motions to ensure proper movement, and, thereby, improve posture, prevent injuries, and enhance performance. —|

>Today, increasingly,women are searching for a space where they can disconnect from their daily routine, relax, have fun, and exercise—both individually and in groups. Responding to this emerg- ing trend, many fitness providers have successfully developed unique ways to serve this market niche. Among them is Club Sport, an Argentine


chain, which has just opened its first women-only facility. The 12,900-square- foot unit is located at the new Champagnat Mall, in the city of Pilar, in the northern area of Buenos Aires. Mariana Cuevas Coelho, the company’s


marketing manager, describes the new corporate brand, Club Sport Women, as being for “women who want to enjoy a full workout in an exclusive atmosphere, seek- ing balance in the different dimensions of health—physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and spiritual. “It’s designed to enable women to cope

we concentrated on consolidating our first three clubs,” reports CEO Alfredo De Goyeneche. “Now we’re beginning a new phase of expansion.” De Goyeneche reports that the new club “has competition just a block


away, but each of the clubs is good and has a very different profile. Our club,” he predicts, “will attract a market that’s been growing in recent years as a result of the strong real estate development in that area of the city.” The monthly dues at the new O2 club, which hopes to attract approxi- mately 1,200 members, will range from $100 to $200. —|

exclusive and limited membership “because we take care of the service we offer,” explains Coelho, who expects the club to reach 800 members within the first five months. The second Club Sport Women will open soon in Buenos Aires. Depending on the public’s response, the company then hopes to open additional women-only facilities. —|
