MOST-HONORABLE MENTIONS
To judge entries submitted to the Les Mills Ultimate Studio Search, Les Mills CEO Phillip Mills enlisted the expertise of Donna Cyrus, senior vice president of programming for Crunch Fitness; Rudy Fabiano, the president and design director at Fabiano Designs; and Scott Jeffrey, the chief creative officer for Interbrand Design Forum. They singled out several non-winning studios as appropriate examplars for the industry:
Fitness Concepts, New York - “I love the high ceilings and the antique stained-glass windows. It creates a wonderful organic feel with varying light throughout the day.” — Mills
City Club, Fort Worth, Texas - “The sound boards’ wavy design not only addresses the sound echo issues in a racquet ball court, but gives the ambience of clouds in the sky.” — Cyrus
Level Up, Kuching, Malaysia - “The electrically charged atmosphere would encourage me to go all-out in the spin class. I could imagine the energy created by my spinning ‘powering’ the room.” — Jeffrey
Go Fitness, Cancun, Mexico - “They were able to take the energy of the classes and tie that into the entire club.” — Cyrus
LIFE Clubs, New York - “This is a fabulous sound and light system, and decor.” — Mills
Other companies on the judges’ short list were: Fitness Centre Pura Vita, Emden, Germany; Zone Health and Fitness, Salisbury Plain, Australia; Powerhouse Utica, Utica, New York; Energy Gym, Selbyville, Delaware; and Re-Creation Carnegie, Melbourne, Australia. —|

PUSHING DESIGN BOUNDARIES
While none of the Les Mills gyms in New Zealand were eligible to participate in the Ultimate Studio Search, these facilities are no less committed to design excellence. The company’s most recent addition,
Les Mills Britomart, in downtown Auckland, is ideally situated to draw commuter and residential foot traffic, while comple- menting its bigger brother, Les Mills Auckland—which has 10,000 group-
fitness visits a week—just up the road. Built adjacent to the city’s central
railway station, its location on prime real estate means space is tight and smart design is crucial. To maximize capacity, the stage is set across the corner of the main group-fitness studio, effectively creating a diamond-shaped layout. To protect personal space, the studio carpet has been specially woven
with circles—approximately four feet in diameter—defining the ideal individual workout area. On the other hand, each bike in the
RPM studio is deliberately set as close to each other as possible, within close proximity to the stage, to replicate the experience of pack riding and make it easy for people to engage with instruc- tors and one another. —|
