much passion there is for this busi- ness among the attendees. These events provide us with an opportunity to talk to our franchisees, vendors, and investors about the new things that are happening at GGI. There’s a lot of enthusiasm for our new initia- tives, and IHRSA was the perfect venue to capitalize on it.
CBI: Looking ahead, what are your plans for 2011 and 2012? How many new clubs do you expect to open in the U.S. and internationally?
JS: We anticipate having 20-30 new domestic clubs in 2011 and up to 100 by the end of 2012. About 20% will be full-service clubs, and the remainder will be Gold’s Gym Express clubs. International development is also moving at a fast clip. Our master franchisees in India, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Philippines, and other places are ahead of schedule.
India, alone, may exceed 100 new clubs over this time period. During the past few years, we’ve also opened Gold’s Gym clubs in Spain, Poland, and Vene- zuela, and, now, we’re drawing interest from other areas of the world.
CBI:And, finally, on a more personal note: in what ways has fitness made a lasting, indelible impact on your life?
JS: I joined my first gym, a European Health Spa, when I was 21, and I’ve been a gym member ever since. However, over time, all of the business dinners, traveling, and entertaining in the hotel industry took their toll. Thankfully, I see the Gold’s opportunity as a message from God to get back in shape! Todd Scartozzi, our chief oper- ating officer (COO), and I work out every day at a Gold’s franchise near our office in Irving, Texas, and I use our Plano facility on weekends.
New GGI ‘Express’ concept I’m especially proud of my oldest
son, Mitchell, who’s transformed his life through fitness. When he went to college, Mitchell was 6'4" and weighed about 260 pounds. He joined a Gold’s Gym near campus, where he met a trainer, Courtney Palmer, who was our fitness manager. Courtney put Mitchell on the path to success, and he’s now 210 pounds, toned and muscular, and an inspiration to me, my wife, and our two other sons. —|
