We make a difference


hugely honoured to be invited to succeed Sir Tom Farmer as Chairman on his retirement in July. I know first-hand what a massive difference the DofE can make to participants’ lives, and look forward to working with the DofE network to create even more opportunities for young people to flourish.

Record numbers of young people have been taking part and last year saw an incredible rise of 11% to 79,310 Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards achieved.


The successful launch of our online management system (eDofE), and our continued focus on raising standards and building confidence in the consistency of the DofE across the UK, mean that we have solid foundations on which to build. However, we cannot ignore the economic environment, and the tremendous pressure on the resources of local authorities in


he Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a national youth Charity that operates throughout the UK. I am truly delighted to be writing my very first report as Chairman and was


particular. The DofE enjoys exceptional support from our local authority partners and I am pleased to report on the success of events held in Edinburgh, Cardiff and at Buckingham Palace which drew together Directors of Children’s Services and others in unprecedented numbers to celebrate our partnership with them, update them on our progress and share our ambitions. Our aim is to work together to ensure we maintain and grow our support for young people despite the current pressures.


To all existing and prospective DofE supporters, I give heartfelt thanks for everything you make possible. Your backing has been critical both to making the DofE the world’s leading achievement Award for young people, and to the continuing success of our work across the UK. This much appreciated support has helped ensure a positive and meaningful difference to the lives of hundreds of thousands of young people.
