André was born on a tough council estate in Peckham and struggles with dyslexia. His mother expected him to get into trouble, but he started at his local youth club and was encouraged to do his DofE. On completing his Gold expedition in the Brecon Beacons he said “I never guessed it was possible to be that wet and not be swimming, but when we finished, it was the best feeling ever.”
