Archi’s Acres Goes to Washington C
olin and Karen Archipley, owners of Archi’s Acres, in Escondido, recently took a trip to Washington, D.C., to discuss their innovative Veteran Sustainable
Agriculture Training (VSAT) program with the nation’s top leaders. During the April trip, they met with the Organic Trade Association to speak
about hydroponic farms and address hunger and obesity problems in cities. The Archipleys met with Dr. Laura Adolfie at the Pentagon on behalf of United Sustainable Agriculture, manufacturers of hydroponic con- tainers for disaster relief. In addition, they met with Congressional Fellow Damien M. Jacobs at the office of U.S. Congressman Darryl Issa, and with U.S. Congressman Bob Filner, ranking Democrat affairs committee member, to discuss writing legislation that supports the Veterans to
Farms movement. The Archipleys’ final stop was at the office of First Lady Michelle Obama, where they met with with Matt Flavin, director of Veterans and Wounded Warrior Policy. Archi’s Acres was established in 2007 as a pro-American and pro-veteran
company, and the Archipleys created the VSAT program to offer combat veterans transition, training and employment in the exploding market of sustainable farm- ing. “Our philosophy is to look to the veteran community for their assets, such as leadership, and give them opportunities in a growing industry and in the compa- ny,” says Colin Archipley. “This will instill confidence in the veterans, and we will have the opportunity to tap into their ability to adapt and overcome, to take on a challenge, and to know self and seek improvement.”
