This was largely because those who stayed at home forgot to plan well and treat their time off from work as a true vacation. Today, as gas and airline ticket pric-
es rise, along with stress levels due to waiting in lines, lost luggage and missed flight connections, Liz Clarke, innkeeper at the Kate Stanton Inn, in Encinitas, is booking more reservations for local and regional guests than long-distance ones.

Several notable spas, resorts and golf courses are also close to the inn. “We are three miles from La Costa Resort and Spa, home to golf and tennis tournaments; The Chopra Center; and 10 miles from the San Diego County Fairgrounds, Del Mar Race Track and Torrey Pines Golf course,” explains Clarke. The San Diego Zoo, Sea World, San Diego Bay and Coronado Island ferry are a half-hour drive or a “Coast- er” train ride away. Even though there is plenty to keep
guests busy, many of them choose to do nothing more than enjoy the casual elegance of the country beach house; the hospitality of the innkeeper and her scrumptious breakfast buffet; the breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and Batiquitos Lagoon; a walk along the beach or fun, stand-up paddleboard rides; a good book; or shopping and dining at any one of Encinitas’ restau- rants. “There is always a glass of good wine waiting for our guests at the end of their day,” notes Clarke. The Kate Stanton Inn accepts spe- cial dietary requests, including, but not limited to, dairy-free, wheat- or gluten- free, low sugar (diabetic), low carb (high protein), vegetarian and organic.
