In a world where geographical mobility is a cultural expectation—the U.S. Census Bureau reports that the average American moves 11 times in a lifetime—a native San Diegan such as Julie Taylor, co-founder of Newcomers San Diego – Community Connections, is a rare find. Born in La Jolla, Taylor graduated from La Jolla High School and later earned her music degree from the California Institute of the Arts, in Valencia.
As a young classical guitarist who stud- ied with the internationally recognized Romero family, Taylor spent several years performing her original composi- tions, ranging from country western to jazz, in venues from Los Angeles to Europe, When she settled in Los Angeles, she channeled the experience and confidence acquired from perform- ing in front of audiences into the music industry and worked with fellow artists in recording studios. After 22 years in a dynamic and
ever-changing industry, with several re- cordings to her credit, Taylor looked to her San Diego roots for a short reprieve. “I only intended to take a break, but when I got back to La Jolla and learned

Since 1998, Newcomers San Diego has been delivering a package of complimentary gifts and informational material that typically contains voter registration forms, Department of Motor Vehicle handbooks and letters from local government officials. Advertisers range from small per- sonal service businesses such as beauty salons to national corporations, banks and brokerage firms. “Our five-point program from the advertisers includes an introduction to a potential new cli- ent, a profile of the business service, a complimentary gift for the new home, a complimentary service offered at the place of business, and a list of the names and addresses of the household for follow-up,” advises Taylor. This way, a relationship is estab- lished between the potential new client and the businesses before they meet. “New households are always grateful to receive the overview of their com- munity’s services,” says Taylor, who also offers a unique Newcomers San Diego Business to Business program.
