YMCA Creates Youth Learning Garden T
“By connecting families and children to the nat- body, mind & soul
ural world through gardening, we are better able to improve healthy behaviors, attitudes and knowledge about where food comes from and establish life-long health habits,” says Angela Jones, director for health and wellness initiatives for the Y. The youth learning garden will provide children ages 5 to 12 who participate in the Y’s afterschool and summer day camp programs with the opportunities to improve interpersonal social skills and bolster self- esteem through learning how to work cooperatively with each other and adults to become empowered to grow, nurture and enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables. “The youth learning garden truly brings learning to life through an edible
schoolyard,” Jones says. “When implemented as a coordinated approach, the youth learning garden and healthy eating curriculum have been demonstrated to be an ideal way for students to experience hands-on learning opportunities in a non-threatening outdoor environment.” The community partnership calls upon Y staff, UCO students and faculty,
The City of Edmond, Urban Harvest, OSU-OKC master gardeners, community volunteers and other private and nonprofit agencies to come together toward a common goal of providing greater opportunities for nutrition for the young people of Oklahoma.
