PRO-FILE ANITA HOFMANN East Coast

Fitness educator Anita Hofmann injects her passion for health and fitness across Atlantic Canada

Q: Can you describe for canfitpro members what you do within the fitness industry?

A: A great degree of what I do centers around education in the province of New Brunswick. I enjoy educating fitness profession- als about what it means to be a successful professional in such an opportunity-rich industry. I certify in the areas of Nutrition and Wellness, Personal Training, Older Adult, Pre and Post Natal Fitness, and CPR/AED. In addition, I have my own mom and baby fitness business. I also provide continuing education courses, assist in the development of various programs such as learn to run programs within the province, and regularly present at health and wellness conferences and schools.

Q: How long have you been active in this role?

A: I have been an active health and fitness profes- sional and educator for the past 15 years. However, my involvement in health and fitness has spanned my entire life.

Q: What do you love about what you do?

A: I get a great deal of satisfaction seeing what fitness professionals can do when they work together in assisting clients and the public in becoming more active and healthier. There are some fantastic, creative, and collaborative programs out there. It is also great to see my ideas, concepts, and programs being implemented across Atlantic Canada.

Q: What is the biggest mistake you’ve made and how have you learned from it?

A: When I first started in the industry, I believe I underestimated the impact I had on a client’s health and wellness. Now, at the age of 36, I never take for granted the health and wellness of others. I work, sometimes tirelessly, in ensuring that every interaction with a client comes with a great deal of thought. Every aspect of a client’s wellness goal is taken into consideration. I spend more time assess- ing, evaluating, and looking at the whole person and am a far better person and professional because of this.

Q: You’ve had the opportunity to travel the world experiencing fitness. Are there any interesting stories you’d like to share with canfitpro members?

A: My interest and passion for running has provided me with count- less inspirational stories. No matter where the race may be, nothing warms my heart more than seeing individuals who have encountered enormous obstacles cross the finish line. There are so many people, despite illness or injury, who have a goal to complete a marathon and do it! I cannot tell you how many tears I have lost at a finish line of a major racing event. Seeing families running an event together and finishing together is really what it is all about for me. My life is continuously surrounded by inspiration.

44 canfitpro MARCH/APRIL 2011 Anita says:

“Continue to educate yourself. Your skills will only improve and the more you see the benefits from your education, the more you’ll realize there is so much more to learn.”

Q: What do you believe sets certain people apart from the rest? Why do some instructors for example, have standing room only or some personal trainers are always in demand?

A: An extraordinary fitness professional is one that is always looking for ways to become better and wiser about their profession and their work. Those who we see with full classes or client waiting lists are those that have an innate passion for the work they do. That passion resonates throughout all aspects of their life and people simply want to be around that…who wouldn’t?

Q: What advice can you share to those new to the field in order to be successful?

A: Find a mentor. Find someone who displays professionalism and success in his or her own discipline – whether it be fitness or not – and learn about being a better professional. Allow the mentor to inspire your creativity, ignite your spirit, and appreciate your role in the fitness industry. This will prevent complacency and burnout.
