MEMBER SPOTLIGHT NIKKI KAMPHUIS Fit to Franchise!
Meet Nikki Kamphuis, this issue’s Member Spotlight, and one of the pioneers of the Cardio-Core franchise in Ontario.
Q: How did you first get involved in the fitness industry?
A: I’ve always had a passion for exercise and keeping fit. As a child, I was involved in track and field and gymnastics. Even in my teens, I enjoyed fitness workouts, doing the 20-minute workout and calis- thenics and choosing a healthier lifestyle as an older teen. In 2004/2005 I was working for an office in Haliburton and
decided to run some group fitness classes on my lunch hour in our gym. Later that year, I moved back to the city and hired a personal trainer to do my first Sprint Triathlon. I decided to become a per- sonal trainer that year due to my experience with that training.
Q: Describe what you currently do.
A: I currently co-own and operate Cardio-Core Fitness Bootcamp in Scarborough with my partner Christine Purdy. We were the first Cardio-Core franchise to open in Ontario along with Burlington in January 2007 and we were catalysts in growing into the 12 franchises we now have in Ontario. I am the fitness director responsible for programming and coach-
ing our clients and assisting in coaching our trainers. I also teach a core conditioning class at a Moksha Yoga studio and have personal training clients. Training girls’ athletic teams (hockey and soccer) is a new venture for us and we are very excited about that as well.
Q: Describe your favourite fitness routine and why you love it.
A: My favourite fitness routine is doing conditioning sets (like we do in bootcamp) with moderate weights. Throwing together four to six exercises and doing them in a circuit style. This can be done in the gym or in a playground combining strength training, body weight exercises, and cardio blasts. I love it because I feel powerful, exhilarated, energized and fired up after a workout like this and that I can tackle anything!
Q: How has your focus on fitness changed your life or that of others?
A: My life is so rewarding with fitness and healthy eating being the foundation. I feel more fit now at almost 44 then I was back at age 20. It is amazing to be able to run a half marathon, participate in a trail running event, or participate in a sprint dualathon confidently, even if I haven’t followed the specific training program. My focus on fitness, particularly through my camp has spurred
a lifestyle change to countless members. Empowering others that they can enjoy fitness has been very rewarding.
Q: What is the most valuable lesson you have learned through your fitness or life experience?
A: The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is that your attitude towards life and in fitness and towards your health goals can make or break your future. You need to be forgiving, be consistent, and have an “I

can do” attitude to be a winner. It doesn’t matter where you come from—it’s where you choose to go to that counts.
Q: What has been your greatest challenge and how did you overcome it?
A: My greatest challenge has been to put myself first. For 20 years, I was always in a relationship and taking care of my partner or my son. Five years ago, I decided to take some workshops and personal development courses and was open to creating possibilities for myself. Recently, after taking a Landmark Education course, I now have
the tools and recognition to live life authentically, honouring myself and my goals for my future.
Q: What health and fitness advice do you have for oth- er canfitpro members to enhance their lifestyles?
A: Make a difference in someone else’s life. With each client you train and coach, take it as a personal quest to make a difference in their life. Get to know your clients, listen to them, and be there for them.
