BECOMING APPROVED The various books within the ATA’s registration can be a bit confusing. Helen explains it well. When a foal is first registered with the ATA, it goes either into the Official Registry Book (ORB) or the Official Appendix Book (OAB). Stallions and mares in the latter are unable to move up to the OSB (Official Stud Book) because they have sires that are either non-approved Trakehners or horses from another breed. (They must have at least 50% Trakehner blood to be registered at all.) The ORB has five Divisions and in all five the sire must be an approved Trakehner stallion. ORB-A is for foals out of an approved Trakehner mare, ORB-B registers foals out of a Jockey Club registered Thoroughbred mare, ORB-C for foals out of a purebred Arabian or Shagya mare, ORB-E for imported purebred Trakehners and ORB-D for foals out of all other dams. Stallions and mares registered in ORB-A and ORB-E can be inspected for breeding approval in their three- year-old year. If approved they go into the OSB. Horses registered in ORB-B or ORB-C are inspected for the Preliminary Stud Book (PSB). If approved, their foals are eligible to come for Stud Book inspection. On a rare occasion, a Thoroughbred or Arabian stallion with a performance record is inspected for the OSB. If approved, he is given a restricted OSB registration, which means that only foals from mares that don’t have a Thoroughbred or Arabian parent are registered as purebred Trakehners (in ORB-A).

v v v The Trakehner is an athletic and noble breed, and it

owes the Thoroughbred and the Arabian for some of its distinct characteristics. To maintain these qualities, Trakehner breeding will continue to carefully allow the crossing of a limited amount of these outstanding athletes.
