Indian River County Firefighters Fair
Our Indian River County Fire- fighters and Paramedics are so much more than brave rescuers that go into action and douse
hazardous fires when threatening community members and property. They rescue people from accidents and some- times provide emergency medical services. Once known as
21
“firemen” the term has become obsolete with the increased number of women on the job. Male or female, there is no shortage of cour- age, generosity and energy demonstrated by the Firefighter of Indian River County, who number 238 uni- formed personnel. After a fire decimates
the lives of local fami- lies, the Firefighters join the American Red Cross to help lighten the pressure of the tragedy by providing financial assistance to local burn victims and families who have lost their possessions. The firefighters respond first with brav- ery, then with compassion. All fire stations are collection points for the Toys for Tots

program during the holiday season. The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters. This “pay it forward” concept has proven to cultivate responsible, pro- ductive, patriotic citizens of the future…. And there is noth- ing more beautiful than the smile on a child’s face! To that end, the IRC Firefighters provide scholarship funding to the two county public high schools in addition to food and cloth- ing for families for the start of the school year and during the holidays. Various local charities are identified to receive financial
support from the Firefighters….and when the community calls, the firefighters provide manpower volunteers to civic and cultural groups. They also frequently donate funds to provide equipment or supplies to benefit public safety Most people notice the Firefighters and Paramedics out
en masse on Labor Day weekend, with their familiar high topped boots collecting for the Muscular Dystrophy Asso- ciation. MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education Of course, the two biggest endeavors of the year are the
chili cook-off and the Firefighters’ Fair. Proceeds from the chili cook-off benefit one chosen charitable agency in In- dian River County each year. The Fair’s proceeds benefit the funding of the various projects above, with one third of the net Fair proceeds going to the county for Fairground improvements, in order to continue to enhance the quality of life in Indian River County. See you at the Fair March 11 – 20, 2011.
