Metric Completes Phase 1 of Madison (WI) Conversion Metric Parking, which has been pro-

ducing machines for the parking industry for more than 30 years, has just complet- ed Phase 1 of the three-phase City of Madison (WI) plan to replace single-space meters in its central business district (CBD).

Aura pay-by-space multi-space

meters will replace 800 of the nearly 1,600 single-space meters in the CBD. Phase 1

comprises 15 meters that accept coins and credit/debit cards as forms of payment. Phase 2 will total 70 Aura meters, with 15 meters in Phase 3. Madison is using this phased-in

approach to help users get accustomed to the new type of paid parking and to ensure the success of the program. The city wants to provide convenience to parkers by offering multiple forms of

payment so they won’t have to worry about having enough or the correct change to pay for parking. City employees remotely monitor the

Aura meters using Metric’s WebASLAN back-office system. Owned and operated by the city, it allows remote viewing of the status of each machine and provides enforcement data via handheld units. Bill Knobeloch, Madison’s Parking

Operations Manager, said, “The meters have been well-received, with more than 50,000 transactions, and over half of them with credit cards. … Parking enforcement officers notice an increased compliance rate in multi- space areas, perhaps as a result of alternative forms of payment.”
