Pony Tales THE GRANDAUGHTER CHRONICLES PART XXII

A

banquets, my granddaughter is on a mission. Her hair is beautiful and long enough to pull it back in the custom- ary pony tail most young girls wear. She has been happy and content with all the hair ‘things’ she has, but at the banquets she saw girls with hair pulled back and tied in all sorts of beautiful ways. Of course, her mission is now to learn how to do all of it “just like they do!” While I love this sudden interest in her appearance, she

is making my life quite complicated at times but at the same time, it has added value to her school work. She can now finish her home work assignments in record time, a require- ment before she can log on to the internet and research pony tails for girls hair. As she finds a picture

she is quickly becoming and I recognize looks of the woman she will be. She reminds me so much of her mother at that age and, of course, me so many many de- cades ago. It is a poignant time

for me as the times change in her life and mine. When we encoun- ter these types of expe- riences it brings us closer together. At the same time it always includes a tinge of sadness for me as I realize I am getting older at the same time. Her life is just beginning to open up like a rose that she will take possession of in a few short years, and my life is on the back side. I never regret the decision to take this child into my life

she likes several copies are printed, and presented to me for assistance. While I am certainly flattered by her belief that I can make all things happen, fixing her hair is not one of my areas of expertise. You would never know that by the enthu- siasm and excitement that ema- nates from her room as we try to make her hair look “just like the picture”. When we are able to accomplish the designated task, there are cheers and squeals and squeaks from both of us. I must say she is so charming and

grown up looking with her hair all dolled up. It makes me a little sad as it is even more obvious she is growing older. While still a little girl, I see shades of the young lady

when her mother passed away. She brought joy and laugh- ter to an empty house and has added excitement with the move to LA. I love the young woman on the horizon but miss the child who is quickly fading away.

Around the world, around the clock!
