FINAL THOUGHT Bandit Signs — Who Me? Y
By GHBA vice president & CEO TOY WOOD, JD, CAE, CGA, CGP
es, you. For years GHBA has worked on the issue of directional signage and so far has received little cooperation from the local jurisdictions. The law is that signage in
public rights-of-way is illegal, no two ways about it.
You may put your small or large signs on your own property or property where the owner has agreed to placement only. Otherwise you are subject to fines per sign per day.
The bigger issues are fairness, a level playing field, and being a professional and honorable industry
by following the law. It is extremely difficult for your leadership—your fellow builders—to answer tough questions from the media or elected officials about GHBA’s position on “bandit signs” and the members who are still using them. They always want to know how we can allow a member who blatantly breaks the law to remain a member. Tough question without a good answer.
The truth is, the use of bandit signs in most of our area has been drastically reduced. This is great news, but it makes those continuing to use the signs even more obvious, so STOP IT. Thanks very much.
Do You Know SAM? SAM stands out from the crowd. SAM is a leader. SAM doesn't jump on the bandwagon;
SAM is driving it! People know they can rely on SAM, because SAM gets things done.
GHBA would like to recognize our extraordinary associate members. We call them SAM—or our Sustaining Associate Members. Associates make up about two- thirds of the GHBA membership roster, and through extra financial commitments from sponsorships, they finance a large portion of the advocacy and ongoing work on behalf of the housing industry.
The SAM program was new in 2010, and we've gotten some great response from our members! A very special thanks to the 2010 Sustaining Associate Members, listed on this page. Your support of GHBA events and initiatives is second-to-none, and we are grateful for your dedication to the industry
as a whole. If you see one of our SAMs (be on the lookout for the SAM ribbons at association events), please take a minute to say 'thank you' to our superstar associates.
Think you could be a Sustaining Associate Member? GHBA released its 2011 Marketing Guide in September. All types of sponsorship opportunities are listed in the guide, so use it to plan your annual participation. Any associate member whose financial contributions through sponsorships, advertising in the magazine or online reach $10,000 or more during the year will become a Platinum Sustaining Associate Member. Associates whose contributions reach $5,000 will become Gold Sustaining Members.
