I read your column on buying vs. leasing software last month. What are the traps, or things I need to know?

Wow, that is direct, and probably the most critically important approach. If you are buying a software system on a subscription basis, remember that like a magazine, you keep paying to use it. If you stop paying, eventually, that company is going to turn off the access. You may be on the hook to pay for updates, technical support, etc. In either case, make sure the company is stable, well funded and well positioned before your make a purchase. If your subscription expires, keep in mind all the data is always yours (with every company I know about). But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do a periodical back up on your own. You can run a backup directly to your inhouse servers, hire a Web backup service, or ask the software company to send you the data on a DVD or via FTP.
