REMODELORS COUNCIL NEWS

You Won't Regret It A

s I write this column, 2010 is winding down. At this time of the year, when

the holiday festivities permit, we begin to think about the coming year. We work on goals, both professional and personal, make New Year resolutions, and prepare to move optimistically into a new year full of opportunity. By the time you read this, we’ll be nearly two months into 2011 and I’m sure you’ve lost the weight, joined a gym, read that book and taken care of that task you’ve been avoiding.

2011 brings about a year brimming with opportunities for the Remodelors Council as well. The RMC board and key committee leaders have already started work on the many endeavors we’ll be undertaking this year including: the AIA Sandcastle Competition, charity project(s), the Vendor Showcase, networking and luncheon meetings, and plans for a new educational program which should appeal to everyone, to name a few.

Opportunities abound for all members to get involved with something that appeals to them. The benefits are many. Members get to know their fellow members better, and get a chance to give something back to the association, industry and the community.

Article by 2011 RMC President Rob Hellyer, CGR, GMB, CAPS, Premier Remodeling & Construction LP

I’m absolutely confident in saying that, while there is work involved, I don’t think anyone would say that they didn’t have fun working with the other members in bringing about a successful completion to the task at hand.

The first opportunity comes later this

month and requires little work, but does take a day of your time—a small sacrifice. Every legislative year, members from each of the builders associations in Texas converge on Austin. 2011 is a legislative year and Rally Day is scheduled for February 23. Buses will depart from the GHBA offices in the morning for the drive to Austin.

You’ll team up with other members and spend a few minutes with some of the Texas legislators. A barbeque lunch is served on the Capitol rotunda and busses stop for dinner on the way back. The trip provides an opportunity to get to know your local association members, those from other associations and a bit of a glimpse into the workings of state politics. Most importantly, it’s fun. By now you should have received detailed information, but you can contact the GHBA office for details.

I encourage each of you to get involved. Ask me, or any board or committee member. Whatever your interest is, there is SOMETHING for you. Write an article for the Houston Chronicle (we always need those), participate in the charity project, plan a party or design a sandcastle—join in on the fun! You absolutely will not regret it, I guarantee it.

Final note—plan on attending the February RMC luncheon to hear the GHBA & Remodelors Council Treasurer John Madsen, CPA and Karen Acord of Benefit Concepts Inc. discuss how health care reform and new tax legislation will affect the remodeling industry.
