suggests the cost is being met by Richard Branson’s empire.
Or it might be assumed the National Health Service picks up the tab.
In fact, getting on for half of the costs of the service are met by voluntary fund raising by individuals and groups across London.
Recently the service, whose teams work from a fleet of cars during the hours of darkness, has been able to expand to a 24/7 operation.
But it is only made possible by teams of dedicated fundraisers who organise events, hold flag days, stand on street corners with collecting tins and subscribe to the weekly lottery, with prizes of up to £2,000.
If the connection between this fund raising and the life in SE9 seems remote, the occasions when the helicopter has been scrambled to emergencies locally have, in fact, been many.

ordinator and in December organised an open day for the service at the Eltham Centre aiming to recruit helpers.
“It’s the best job I’ve ever had”, said Richard, a veteran of the marketing in the commercial sector. “because I feel I can make a difference to people’s lives.”
Richard’s job is to establish a network of volunteers across the London boroughs willing to take the lead in raising funds for the service.
He has always had an interest in aviation and held a private pilot’s licence for many years flying light aircraft and crewing on WW2 planes at airshows.
Richard has been speaking to local shops and community organisers about fundraising for LAA and the cause will make an increased presence across town in the coming year.
