9am to 7pm School to Expand into Public Open Space
been given the go-ahead despite the protests of local environment groups.

The expansion of school will mean a new hall and expanded facilities for play and nature conservation on open land to the rear.
A new community games court, play area and nature conservation habitat will be available for use by the public outside school hours.
The extension to the primary school, which is alongside the approach road to Severndroog Castle, has caused concern at the loss of public access to an area of grass and trees which is classed as Metropolitan Open Land and was opposed by a range of groups including the Greenwich Parks Forum, the Shooters Hill Woodlands Working Party and the Severndroog Preservation Trust.
But Greenwich Council’s Planning Board has Take an interest in local events
£2.3m expansion of Christ Church primary school on Shooters Hill has
decided that the interests of the school’s children and the need to alleviate the current cramped conditions should take precedence over the loss of public open space.
Following a public consultation in the summer, compromise plans were put forward which allow Christ Church pupils and teachers exclusive access to new facilities in school hours and the public access after school, in holidays and at weekends.
Access to the site, which will occupy much of the short grass area behind the school, will be controlled by fences and gates both from the school, the woods and the side road leading to Severndroog.
The school has been desperate to expand because the amount of outdoor area for pupils falls far beneath what is recommended. The plans will enable construction of a new hall and dining areas replacing outdated facilities belonging to the neighbouring church.
Proposals to move the entire school to another location on Shooters Hill foundered due to the excessive costs involved.
The new outdoor facilities will include a soft play zone with landscaping and planting, a games court, a hard informal play area and nature conservation habitat.
Both the Greenwich Parks Forum and the Shooters Hill Woodlands Working Party will work to ensure that the school honours its commitment to make the fenced-in space accessible to the community after school, at weekends and during holidays.
Terry Powley, chair of the Greenwich Parks Forum, commented: “The revisions cannot hide the fact that building on protected Metropolitan Open Land goes against the full force of central and local planning advice.
“The plans to construct a hard play area are hardly the most sympathetic way to intrude on open and natural land.”
