Knitters join Stitchers and Lacemakers at St Mary's A


new club for SE9’s knitting fraternity has been formed,


meeting fortnightly at St Mary’s Community Centre.


Eltham Knitters meets at St Mary’s, in the High Street, on alternate Wednesday afternoons and is catering for all abilities.


The group was started by life-long knitter Jane Lawrence.


“We are informal and the aim is to pool people’s skills and knowledge”, she said.


Jane became involved in St Mary’s after taking early retirement from the NHS in central London and is due to take over as chair of the board of trustees in the New Year. “I have been knitting since I was a young girl and thought this was something I could contribute to the community by forming a club”, she said.


The name ‘Eltham Knitters’ was coined to complement the existing ‘Eltham Stitchers’ , which also meets at St Mary’s,

The knitting group meets from 2 – 4.30pm.

They are soon to be joined at St Mary’s by the Royal Eltham Quilters, under the leadership of accomplished quilter Pauline Barnes.


The group is to meet every Thursday evening at the Community Centre. Pauline runs a day-time class at St Joseph’s RC church in Kidbrooke Park Road but it has become over-subscribed with a waiting list.


Said Pauline: “There is obviously a strong demand for learning about quilting, so we decided to start up an evening group for people on the waiting list and those who couldn’t attend in the day- time.”


Royal Eltham Stitchers is meeting on Wednesday evenings and also runs informal sessions under Pauline’s expert eye.

In order to be able to collect items, you must bring with you the collection tickets or ID matching the name on the item of clothing, and also be able to confirm details of the clothing left.


Any goods unclaimed after 7 February will be donated to the British Red Cross charity.
