Baccalaureate (IB) will have the chance to take the qualification locally from 2013.


The post-16 qualification is becoming increasingly popular with students and universities as a broader and more challenging alternative to A-levels.


SEnine understands that Eltham Hill Technology College will be equipped to teach the qualification in its new post-16 accommodation when building work is completed at the school.


The school’s new post-16 unit will be co-educational and has been chosen to become lead centre for IB in the borough. The school is already starting to recruit staff


Building work will start this month to provide new accommodation for the girls’ secondary school which currently only has provision up to GCSE level.. When completed in 2012, the existing buildings will be demolished to make way for the post-16 unit and the creative curriculum

Under the IB, students take six subjects, including languages, a social study, an experimental science and mathematics, gaining overall credits up to a maximum of 45


The provision of IB within Greenwich is part of a wider strategy to retain more able pupils within the borough; currently many students wishing to take the IB travel into Bexley borough.


Eltham Hill is celebrating having been named as ‘most improved school in London’ in its exam results for 14 – 16 year olds.


The school’s results at ‘Key Stage 4’ improved by 22 per cent in 2010,
