Designer Places / Our regular showroom showcase

OPENED

in September 2010, the new

Kohler showroom by West One Bathrooms has already seen plenty of business from the varied mix of potential customers in its Clerkenwell neighbourhood.

Situated next door to the equally impressive Bulthaup showroom on Clerkenwell Road, the new bathroom showroom was created by Kohler’s Creative Director Tristan Butterfield in collaboration with fellow British architect Harvey Langston-Jones.

The vision for the showroom was inspired by the idea of incorporating the Kohler brand to all design, customer experience and product display in a consistent way. Butterfield explains: “The design ethos has been to physically embody the brand in a well thought-through buying process for the customer, to delight and inspire while creating a timeless and harmonious place to shop.”

Langston-Jones adds: “We chose all the materials from a neutral palette: white walls, grey limestone or granite flooring for the public spaces whilst the product suites are in an area defined by pale stones or ceramic tiles.”

The existing shop unit was stripped out, walls and ceilings were demolished to reveal the existing structure and original composition. The look of the

showroom is to create an industrial gallery, exposing existing ventilation ducts, lighting conduits and pipe work which is juxtaposed with black silk-lined walls and crystal chandeliers, creating a dramatic effect which defines, identifies and divides the store.

The consultation area is formed of clean lines and aesthetics where customers and experts meet to discuss ideas, specification and implementation of their new bathrooms.

The range displayed includes suites and cabinetry, stand-alone furniture pieces, handcrafted decorated basins, bathing products, brassware and accessories. Capsule bath collections are mixed with Kohler’s artisan pieces.

Unlike West One’s main Battersea showroom which features a wide range of different brands, all the products at Clerkenwell are Kohler together with other brands from the Kohler stable including Mira, Daryl and Kallista.

Kohler is implementing a world showroom roll-out that began with a showroom New York and now moves to the UK, and London as a key global specification hub for architecture. The concept is a modular one that allows for fast deployment and ease of updating, capable of expanding or contracting to meet economic demand and the most challenging of spaces. Simple and stylish shells can be coordinated with moveable furniture pieces that are prefabricated and shipped anywhere to anywhere in the world.

Currently in the design development stages are new showrooms in Paris, Milan, Dominican Republic, Brazil, Costa Rica, Sydney and Melbourne.
