FABULOUS ABLUTIONS Mark Humphrey really went to town with the design of the

washrooms. He explains: “I created the male and female washrooms based on my philosophy code MH = (x + y)3. This means when it is applied to each washbasin, two partnering elements marry and create one sculptural washing installation.

“The relationship between seductive shapes and lighting is explored in each quality washroom. The functional ‘male’ washing sculpture is a reflection of the female form whilst also, being a beautiful object in space. The opposite principle is the same for the ‘female’ washing masterpiece: it reflects the male form.”

Getting this part right was a key part of the overall project for the owners. Freddie Achom says: “In London, many of the clubs let themselves down with the design and style of their bathrooms. For us, the bathrooms is an important part of the venue as clients who spend a lot of money deserve somewhere clean and beautiful to feel relaxed in.

“THE CEILING IS DEFINITELY THE HEADLINE FEATURE”

The three-year-old club has already won plenty of plaudits, including Best New Club in 2009 at the Bar and Club Awards and Best Club in 2010. It cost £3.5 million to create, but already there is a six month waiting list for anyone wanting to join its 2,000-strong membership list. Whilst the space itself is far from the domestic environment that many designers work with, there are plenty of design devices here that could well prove to be an inspiration for a smaller scale project.

“These kinds of projects can inspire high-

end residential projects in many ways. Firstly, establishing showpiece objects within a space, for example a seductive shaped sculptural sofa in the living area. Or perhaps using illuminated functional objects - such as side tables - as sources of light, encourages a much softer ambience. “This approach to objects, space and light

is my menu for creating night club moods. Translate this philosophy into the home, and residential environments can also become ➔

“The use of Onyx for the sinks and the glass etchings create instant wow factor and a talking point as it’s an environment with high quality finishing and attention to detail.”
