Fancy bringing some high octane design into your home? Now you can have your very own – highly practical - piece of a Formula One car

FOR

any petrolhead, the wait for the new Formula One season

to start in March can seem like a long one. But to ease the Sunday afternoon racing withdrawal symptoms, how about adding a piece of racing history to your home?

A range of home items - including desk light, salt and pepper pots, and coat stand - have been created using recycled parts of Red Bull’s RB5 2009 Formula One cars.

The company that makes this highly unusual interiors collection is Racing Gold, the brainchild of engineer John Haigh. Well over 20 years ago, his first Formula One car component was obtained. The instantly recognisable carbon fibre front wing end plate from the winning car of a British GP was a very proud possession and the subject of many interesting conversations.

John’s career started as an engineer with BMW then in a management role with Lexus followed by Spyker with the most recent responsibility in charge of Rolls- Royce, Bentley & AC restoration in London. With many bespoke projects under his belt, John decided to set up a division to concentrate on an art project.

Haigh explains: “During the early stages of this new venture, an amazing relationship with Red Bull Racing in Milton Keynes was struck. An 18-month process ensued - and what a thoroughly enjoyable ride it has been for all of us at Racing Gold.”

The process consisted of access to the factory stores followed by a series of prototyping stages which led onto an epic 3-day factory photo shoot and a trip to the Italian GP to preview the collection – called

‘Part of the Team - for the first time.

Red Bull’s cars themselves have something of a high design pedigree – even by Formula One’s exacting standards. Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey is widely recognised as being one of the most talented design figures in motorsport and was recently shortlisted for the 2010 Prince Philip Designers Prize.

The team’s 2010 car – the RB6 – delivered the Constructor’s Championship for Red Bull and the Driver’s Championship for German driver Sebastian Vettel. designer
