After the first, successful Playathon in 2007, it was decided to increase the number of hours to six for this year‟s event. If we were
to fill these extra hours we realised we would have to cast our net a little wider. Any concerns we had about filling the time soon disappeared as the schools con- tacted were most supportive and were only too happy to oblige when asked if they could supply us with a „bit more time‟. The day itself went very smoothly and I per- sonally was extremely happy with the end result. We were treated to some excellent performances, in a wide variety of styles and musical combinations, consisting of solo singers and instrumentalists, jazz combos, a rock band, choirs and a full orchestra.
The teachers, schools, parents and students should feel very proud of their efforts and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all concerned. My special thanks go to the teachers. I am very aware that without their support, at this busy time of year, this event would not be possible. The aim of the day was twofold, to offer the opportunity for young people to perform in public and to raise money for two very special children‟s chari- ties, and in this we succeeded. As we go to print we have collected close to £700 and we hope we may be
able to raise a little more over the next few weeks. Finally, a big thank you to the Rotarians, their family members and friends who supported the event with much enthusiasm. I know we need the performers but we also need the people to run the event on the day.
Here‟s looking forward to next Year. George Larkey 9
