Power), Jim Wisecup (Area Manager, overseeing 16 bases for Air Methods), Rex Alexander and Bill Winn (NEMSPA’s General Manager and Safety Officer for Intermountain Life Flight), have participat- ed heavily in the No Pressure Initiative (NPI) process. The current emphasis is on the Cultural Health Assessment and Mitigation Program for Safety (CHAMPS) project, which is essentially an interac- tive cultural and human factors survey intended for all safety critical positions in the air medical industry, including pilots, nurses, paramedics, communications specialists, operational controllers, mechanics, flight physicians and even managers. While the NPI proj- ect was a collaborative effort between all of the pro- fessional associations (though led by NEMSPA), NEMSPA has and AAMS

recently teamed with Vision Zero to launch the comprehensive

CHAMPS project.

LZ CHECK This program has two primary objectives:

1)

Provide air medical helicopter pilots with current information about each helipad they fly into, and 2) provide those same pilots with current Notice to Airman (NOTAM) information about helipads and routes commonly flown. Vicky Spediacci, Director of Operations for REACH Air Medical, and NEMSPA board member, is leading this effort, assisted by Rex Alexander. NEMSPA has partnered with Aerosafe Safety Network (ASN) in a comprehensive web based development project that

pilots to access information and actually access and update

thanks to ASN, for investing significant resources to produce LZ Check (all at no cost to you, the end user) and to Vicky and Rex for their efforts in coor- dinating this much needed project.

Z-COACH As many of you know, NEMSPA has been

very active in sleep and fatigue management for the past two years. Our extensive work with Dr. Mark Rosekind, who was recently appointed to the NTSB Board of Directors, has resulted in a number of stud- ies and, of course the white paper titled “Managing Fatigue in EMS Flight Operations: Challenges and Opportunities,” which dispelled the longstanding controversy over pilots sleeping on duty.
