n behalf of all of us at the British Columbia Hockey League, I would like to welcome you to a special edition of Smart Hockey Magazine. This issue is dedicated to the many educational paths that our graduates have ventured, and the countless opportunities that can arise from competing in the BCHL.

Young players today face a number of important decisions that can have a crucial impact

on their playing futures. The BCHL is committed to providing as much information as possible about our league and teams in order to help prepare these athletes and their families for making these critical choices.

As a league, our objective is to provide young men with the best environment in which

to develop as hockey players and as students. As our main goal is to prepare players for a university or college scholarship, we work closely with our Canadian and U.S. post-secondary counterparts, and have built an infrastructure within our programs to help prepare players for that route. Players who compete in the BCHL retain their amateur status and therefore qualify to receive NCAA scholarships. Our success developing high-calibre talent is evidenced by the hundreds of league graduates competing at the post-secondary level this season.

Some players who begin their junior hockey careers in our league eventually move on to

join Major Junior programs, and the BCHL sees itself as an excellent option for these players as well. By beginning one’s junior career in the BCHL, a student athlete is able to develop while maintaining college eligibility until the time comes to make a decision on where to play next. However, once a player suits up in a Major Junior game, they are ineligible to play NCAA college hockey.

Throughout this magazine you will notice references to ‘Smart Hockey’. This is a concept

that guides so much of what our league is about. The BCHL’s goal is to develop high- level student athletes and ‘Smart Hockey’ refers to our commitment to education, and to the intelligent, fast-paced style of play in our league. BCHL rules foster an environment where skilled athletes have the opportunity to showcase their abilities, further develop as players and people, and secure scholarships to take the next step in their academic and athletic futures.

It is important to remember that developing young hockey players is a marathon, not a

sprint. A final decision on a young man’s playing future does not have be made at 15 or 16 years old, and the BCHL prides itself on enabling student athletes to leave open all of their playing options as they navigate an important phase of their individual growth.

Best Regards,
